So here’s a Mazdaspeed Protege I spotted. Absolutely mint. I love these things. Constantly vying for top spot in my “favorite often forgotten budget sportscar of the early 2000's” catagory, along with the Nissan Sentra Se-r.

Around here, just about all of these returned to the earth before they were probably even paid off.

Same here. A friend of mine had one, a year after she paid it off the rust made it uninspectable. Still ran perfectly, of course.

Sedan or wagon?

I’ve grown pretty fond of these. If I ever decide to buy something cheap and reliable to just eat up miles in moderate comfort, a Protege5 is near the top of the list

As a former owner from  2003-2010 I can confirm they would rust, even under the dealer rust proofing I got done when I bought it.

Yikes. Was this a problem with all Mazdas? I never really hear about rust issues in the Miata community

It really is sad, I really liked the P5 wagon in that yellow.  There’s actually a red one that lives near me that’s not TOO rusty. My 2006 3 had started to rust by the end of 2010 even though I tried hard to keep it clean.
